Privacy Policy
Last updated: 25 September 2026
This policy explains what data tetext — the website tetext.me and its relay server — processes and why. In short: we can't read what you send, and we don't keep it.
Text and files you send
Text and files are encrypted on your device with a key that only your two devices know: the devices agree on it using ECDH (P-256), and the data is encrypted with AES-GCM-256. The relay server receives only ciphertext, forwards it to the other device in the room and does not store it. File names and types are encrypted as well; the server only sees the size of a file and how many chunks it is split into.
Rooms
A room is identified by a random six-digit code and exists only in the server's memory. It is deleted after 10 minutes of inactivity, or if the device that created it disconnects and does not return within 2 minutes. After that, nothing about the room remains on the server.
Technical data
Like any website, tetext receives technical data it needs to work:
- your IP address — kept in memory for rate limiting, which protects rooms from code guessing and the service from abuse; it is forgotten within 20 minutes at most;
- standard request logs (IP address, time, requested address, browser user agent) that our server and hosting providers keep for a limited time for security and troubleshooting.
We do not use this data to identify you, build profiles or show ads.
Data stored on your device
tetext does not use cookies. Your browser's local storage keeps your settings — theme, language and your last choice of what to do with an image. Session storage keeps a temporary ticket (the room code and a random token) that lets the page rejoin its room after a network drop; the browser deletes it when you close the tab.
Text recognition from photos
When you choose “Read text”, the text in a photo is recognized right in your browser (Tesseract). The recognition engine and language models are downloaded from tetext.me, and the photo does not leave your device.
If you choose “Read text with Yandex”, the photo is uploaded directly from your browser to Yandex Images, and the recognized text opens on the Yandex website. In that case the photo is processed by Yandex under the Yandex Privacy Policy. tetext does not receive the photo.
Service providers
- Vercel Inc. hosts the website.
- Heroku (Salesforce, Inc.) hosts the relay server.
- Yandex — only if you choose to read text with Yandex.
We do not sell data or share it with anyone else. The site has no analytics, advertising or social media trackers.
